↳ xibalba
In the Popul Vuh, Xibalba is described as an underground city, mostly associated with death and the twelve Lords of Xibalba. The place itself was immense, housing the council seat of the Lords, the Xibalban ball-court, the halls of the Lords, several gardens, and at least six deadly houses of trials. The purpose of the latter was to humiliate and punish visitors unworthy of entering Xibalba proper. To even qualify to be tested in these trials, however, one would have to first cross three rivers: one of scorpions, one of blood, and one of pus. Then came the four-forked crossroads, and if one passed all the first tests, they would come to the Xibalba council seat. Only after a few further tests and humiliations would the visitor then be sent to the houses of trials.
